For the Floor

The Watts Works Automan started as a necessity.  I was starting a van conversion company out of a 1920’s barn in Ventura California in 2020. I wanted to make a showcase of my skills, a culmination of a decade of work. Naturally, I designed a van that was out of my skill level. So I upgraded my skills, but learning took me longer than I expected. I was running out of money. One night, I saw a video on my social media feed of a DIY woman wrapping a car tire in rope. I liked the idea but it didn't really spark anything in me. Later that week I followed a free craigslist ad for pallets. ( I wanted to make a raised garden bed) This ad took me to the back of a BMW motorcycle dealership. What I found, changed everything and it wasn't pallets. 
Behind that dealership was stacks and stacks of tires, all different shapes, sizes, and widths. The DIY video came screaming back to the forefront of my mind. With different vehicles comes different shapes, different sizes, different stories of the road, on or off, a life of purpose discarded because their time had come. Then my mind raced to my travels, and my schooling as an environmentalist and geographer. Visions of tires discarded in remote places, on beaches, in pits, off roadsides with no one coming to reuse them. Left to rot and decompose or burn and pollute. 
The “AUTOman” is my attempt to inspire. To open people up to truly seeing. To look beyond what is and see what can be. It's an attempt to give back to the world that has taught me everything. A small step, but a step nonetheless.
